Santiniketan
The town of Santiniketan, despite being not so large in size/ area has a rich legacy and identity of heritage and culture. Its history has made it a unique place in the social-cultural landscape of West Bengal. The older name of Santineketan was Bhubandanga (named after Bhuban Sinha, who legend has it was a dacoit). Later the area was handed over to the Tagore family by the previous owners. Maharshi Debendranath , Rabindranath Tagore’s father, was highly attracted by the natural beauty of the place and in the year 1863, established Saantiniketan ( translates into an abode of peace). Maharshi Debendranath was a very learned man and had a philosophical bent of mind. Around 1901, he came to the belief that plain Hinduism is not enough to be a foundation of the society. From his vast knowledge of religion and scripture, he felt that it was the Vedic teachings that were supreme. He began the worship of “Nirakar Brahama” or the God without any kind of form or face, like the ancient people of Vedic era did.
Maharshi Devendra Nath also founded The Bhrahmo Samaj, for the followers of Vedic teaching and those who believed in a God without face or form. This particular sect did not adhere to any particular, did not indulge in idol worshiping, preached teachings of non-violence, spoke against caste system, cruelty against animals and birds and promoted the Vedic lifestyle in general. He was joined by several highly educated and respected bangalies. Back in Santiniketan , Maharshi first built a place for prayers under a Chhatim tree which came to be known as Chhatimtala. Later His able then young son Ravindra Nath Tagore also joined him there. Santiniketan was formally set up in the year 1901.
In the year of 1901, Rabindranath Tagore first set up a small Bramhacharya school in Santiniketan, which later grew and become known as the Patha Bhavan, an school based on of his lofty ideals, whose central idea was that students must learn in a natural environment and only then their learning would be enjoyable as well as fruitful. After received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913, he spent the prize money to expand the school into a university. Since then over the course of more than hundred years, many famous teachers have taught here. The university came to be known as Visva-Bharati. Several world famous personalities are among the alumni of this institution including Indira Gandhi, Satyajit Ray, and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.
